Blind Children Learning Science through Audio-Based Interactive Software

Resumen:
The literature sustains that there is a clear need for science-oriented software for blind children. In this research we present interactive audio-based multimedia software for children with visual disabilities that can be used as a supporting tool for learning science. We studied how to learn science using audio as the principal media and how to develop challenging and encouraging software that at the same time can assist the learning of science in blind children. We designed a customized navigation model for end-users and built a generic software model for role-playing-games. We evaluated the usability of the software and its cognitive impact, verifying that the software stimulates a free and independent use at the users’ own pace. The application was considered as appealing, challenging, and encouraging for learning science by end-users.
